Context
Context
P3M Works was selected by the University of the West of England to join its panel of Digital Consultants as part of the Workforce of the Future programme.
The initiative aimed to support SMEs across the region by improving cyber resilience, strengthening cyber hygiene, and helping organisations better understand and manage modern cyber threats. Many participating businesses had limited internal cyber capability and required practical, proportionate guidance tailored to their operational realities and resource constraints.
Challenge
The challenge
Many SMEs struggle to translate cyber risk into practical action. While organisations often recognise cyber security as important, limited internal expertise, competing business priorities, and budget constraints can make improvement difficult to prioritise or implement effectively.
The programme needed to support businesses with varying levels of cyber maturity while ensuring recommendations remained realistic, achievable, and aligned to the operational realities of SMEs.
Key challenges included:
- Limited internal cyber security capability
- Inconsistent cyber hygiene and governance
- Lack of visibility around vulnerabilities and risk exposure
- Difficulty translating technical threats into actionable improvements
- Resource and budget limitations within SMEs
Approach
Our approach
P3M Works delivered tailored cyber resilience consultancy to participating organisations through a hands-on, collaborative approach.
Working directly with each business, we conducted structured cyber reviews aligned to recognised best practice frameworks, including Cyber Essentials. Rather than delivering generic reports or theoretical recommendations, we focused on identifying practical improvements organisations could realistically implement.
Support was tailored to each organisation’s needs and maturity level, ranging from policy and governance improvements through to technical hardening guidance, bespoke training sessions, and risk workshops.
By combining technical understanding with clear communication and practical prioritisation, P3M Works helped organisations take meaningful steps towards stronger cyber resilience without overwhelming internal teams.
Outcome

The engagement helped participating SMEs improve cyber awareness, strengthen cyber hygiene, and implement practical security improvements suited to their operational environments.
Organisations gained greater visibility of their current cyber posture, clearer understanding of key risks, and achievable roadmaps for ongoing improvement. The programme also helped increase confidence around cyber decision making and encouraged a more proactive approach to resilience across participating businesses.
